Australia hits Twitter big time

It seems we’re quite a savvy social media nation, with a new study released today finding there are more than 2.8 million Australian accounts registered on Twitter.

Contributing to the 750 million global Twitter accounts, Queensland University of Technology’s Social Media Research Group study found Twitter is making steady inroads into Australia with a national Twitter adoption rate of 12 per cent.

While we may be all-over Twitter these days, it wasn’t always the case - with adoption growing slowly in the early days. However, the number of Australians signing up on Twitter peaked by early 2009 with more than 100,000 new registrations per month. Since 2010, the average monthly growth rate is 45,000 accounts, gradually trending upwards to reach 80,000 in August 2013.

"The early hype that saw substantial numbers of early adopters flock to the service may be gone, but as an established social medium, Twitter now enjoys a relatively steady influx of new Australian accounts," says SMRG lead professor Axel Bruns.

A break-down of Australian Twitter accounts by city finds Sydney has the most accounts on 394,000, with Melbourne on 329,000, Brisbane on 138,000 and Perth on 119,000.

Data for the study was collected in September 2013.
