After capturing the attention of the online world, YouTube sensation Michelle Phan is turning her hand to the publishing industry with the launch of her first book, Make Up: Your Life Guide to Beauty, Style and Success Online and Off.
The book has information on everything from building a make-up tool kit to perfecting an online persona. Along with beauty and style tutorials, Make Up includes stories from Phan’s life as well as advice on topics like etiquette, career, entrepreneurship and creativity.
The past seven years of my life have been a rollercoaster, and I've learned a lot and experienced a lot. Seeing all of my followers ask all these questions for life advice, BFF drama, boyfriend advice and even stuff like, "What do I wear to work?", I decided it's really hard to create videos for all of this, and I'd rather create something that is tangible,” Phan told theFashionSpot.
What's more tangible than a book? What's more important than knowledge? Beauty fades, but knowledge lasts forever. We pass down knowledge to our kids and future generations, and I thought this is a great way for me to pass on something beautiful to the future generation. So, Make Up Your Life is everything I've learned in my entire life to help women create a beautiful life of their own.”
The news of Phan’s book publishing deal comes as no surprise to Perseus Books Group’s David Steinberger, who told the Wall Street Journal that the phenomenon of YouTube personalities getting book deals is a harbinger of a book publishing tsunami that is on its way”.
Market Partners International Inc president Lorraine Shanley adds, It doesn’t take much time or money to watch something on YouTube, but it takes both time and money to read something in book form. That said, if you can get a substantial portion of one million followers, you’d be happy.”
And it appears viewers are willing to make the jump from watching their favourite vlogger online to purchasing their book. I’m happy to sell six to 12 copies of a bestselling novel in a month. But when a YouTube star comes in, we sell hundreds in a few hours,” reveals Changing Hands bookstore co-owner Cindy Dach.
Make Up will hit international shelves on October 21, 2014.
