First came Facebook, before Instagram and Snapchat moved swiftly onto the agenda for major media publications. But now there’s a new app about to hit - WhatsApp.
The tool is a cross-platform messaging app that allows for communication exchange without the fees of SMS. Image, text, video and audio can be sent across accounts that include smartphones and Androids. What does this mean for publications? Greater communication with readers for free.
British fashion bible Vogue has long been one of the most innovative glossies around the globe. Now the magazine has confirmed its status with the announcement it is one of the latest to join the WhatsApp bandwagon, making it the self-declared first fashion publication to join.
It announced the news to readers via its website, explaining the app will allow for even faster access to fashion, beauty and lifestyle news: “Joining our group means we’ll message you as soon as the creative director of Dior is announced, or the Chanel catwalk pictures go live, or the Oscars dresses land on the site: no more scouring Twitter or relying on tabloids for your latest fashion fix.”
British Vogue will be joining the likes of The Huffington Post and BBC in utilising the app to send out breaking news stories and alerts to consumers.
