Who: Romance Was Born
When: 7:00pm, May 18, Carriageworks
Hair: Alan White for KMS
Hair look:
“I’m giving a nod to the homage of Del Kathryn Barton with what I’m doing but I want it to be in a more relevant way. A lot of her work is very bold and strong but I want to bring in a looser wave with some curls and movement. There’s a lot of reference to 70s and 80s disco so I’ve been thinking about perms and flat tops - it will be a bit more of a disco frizz rather than a curl on some of the girls. There’s also a soft pastel moment from Goldwell happening on some of the looks, an ethereal vibe, which fits perfectly with this year’s Romance girl. The products have been working amazingly for this look because all of them have that brushable nature. We’ve been using KMS Curl Up Wave Foam Mousse and KMS Add Volume Liquid Dust on towel dried hair, then when we backcomb we’ve been applying KMS Makeover Spray to add that texture and grip. Lastly we’ve used KMS Hairstay Working Hairspray to secure the hold.”
Makeup: Natasha Severino for SEPHORA
Makeup look:
“Romance’s reference and inspiration came from the paintings of Del Kathryn Barton, the artist they’ve collaborated with, Daphne Guinness and Grimes. So we’ve created all of these characters and women based loosely around these muses. There’s a lot of colour going on, and a lot of glitter - it wouldn’t be a Romance show without a lot of glitter. Some of the girls will be cooler rock n’ roll girls so we’ve gone a little darker and edgier on those. We’ve also got more of a polished version which is really glossy makeup, there’s very glossy lips which look like they’ve been kissed all night so the lip line is slightly blurred outside the natural line, it’s very soft looking but with a really hard gloss over the top. Once we worked out what type of looks we wanted to do, we sat down and tweaked every makeup style to the outfit and we’ve used colours that have been picked out of the actual clothes. Everything is quite bespoke even though there’s only five makeup looks and 30 girls. All the products have come from SEPHORA, we’ve used a lot of lip liners, eye liners and a lot of the brightly coloured eye shadows and lots of their chunky mascara. We’ve also used very light bases, we’re using a very iridescent like texture on the skin, just a sheen and then concealer. We wanted the skin to have realness and coolness to avoid things looking too theatrical.”
