bdBLOG: Strong, bold hair trends for 2013

Inspired from catwalks around the world, national technical educator Grant Withnell has predicted the top trends in hair for this year.

Featuring strong, bold, feminine and self-assured styles that reflect the country’s diversity between the different cities, the looks are easily translated to consumers due to their wearability.

The four looks predicted to dominate 2013 are Gloss, Big Bob, Fringer and Sleek Colour.

Gloss - Seen across the red carpet at the Oscars, Gloss is a classic look featuring long, healthy hair loosely styled into big waves created using large curlers or a large-diameter curling iron.

The Big Bob – Playing with different volumes and lengths, the Big Bob clashes different decades and centuries with the ’60s meeting the Renaissance era. The Big Bob takes this classic style to the next level and gives a style that looks elegant and slightly retro in one context and modern and opulent in others,” says Withnell.

To create this look, gather hair in a loose ponytail and secure with a thin elastic, then pull the elastic down close to the end of the ponytail and then guide towards your scalp so the former ponytail forms an inside loop – creating a fake bob.

Fringer – Funnily enough, the Fringer trend is all about the fringe. What makes this look so special is the wide fringe, which is cut straight and boxy. We have already seen lots of short fringes on the catwalks but an eye-brow length fringe is easier to wear and suits most women,” says Withnell.

Sleek Colour – Inspired by street style, Sleek Colour is all about playing with unexpected colour combinations, mixed materials and multiple layering. With this look there are no limits. Multi-coloured highlights and streaks, expressive obre looks, coloured roots or tips combine to produce an explosive interplay of colours,” says Withnell.

While I tend to be quite boring with my hair look (I’ve been long and blonde for as long as I can remember), I do love seeing models and consumers experimenting with their hairstyles. It will be interesting to see how many of these looks crop up during next week’s MBFWA!
