bdBLOG: Recessionistas turn to nail polish rather than lippie

Ok, so the only thing to come out of 2009 that was worse than Couples Retreat was the term recessionista”. Alas, it’s the only word I could think of to define cosmetic-buying women during times of economic downturn. And such is the topic of my blog today.

Turns out nail lacquer has overtaken lipstick as the most recession-proof cosmetic. An international market research company released figures this week that showed sales of nail lacquer have increased by 54 per cent in the last year, while lipstick sales have risen by 14 per cent. These statistics certainly buck the age-old adage that in times of financial trouble, women turn to lippie for a hit of luxury.

OPI released a press release this week citing the growth in the nail care category as being due to innovations and various celebrity alignments. Indeed, almost as important as what Katy Perry is wearing is the colour on her nails.

I personally find nail polish to be a much more worthwhile investment than a lipstick, and if money’s tight, I’ll definitely opt for the former. For starters, I’m far more partial to experimenting with colours on my fingertips than on my face (everyone that knows me can vouch I rarely stray from neutral eye shadows let alone a pale, glossy lip). Plus lipsticks can very easily become lost to the deep, dark depths of my handbag to the point of no return, while my polishes are safely stored in box at home, waiting patiently for the next Thursday evening when I decide I can’t stare at my chipped fingertips one moment longer.

What’s your opinion bd members? Lippie or a polish? If you had to choose…
