Pinterest's 2017 beauty predictions

The annual Pinterest 100 report predicts the trends of the new year based purely on search and save user activity over the past 12 months. Covering categories such as Home, Women's Style, Men's Style and Travel, the results are telling given the billions of images that are narrowed down by an in-house team over the year.

Beauty itself racked up more than four billion pins and is one of the largest categories on Pinterest. Here's a rundown of 2016's top 10:

Braided top knots: Braided top knots now garner more traction than crown braids with engagement up 125 per cent in 2016. As braids remain a continuing catwalk trend, more complex and intricate styling will undoubtedly inspire further online tutorials and product development.

No-heat hairstyling: Searches and pins for natural hair increased by 35 per cent in 2016 and also rose by 188 per cent for shag cuts, signalling a general trend for no-heat hairstyling tips and looks.

Ash balayage: The popular balayage hair-colouring trend is updated with ashy, dull and grey tones, acknowledging the continuing popularity of grey and silver hair looks.

Microblading: There is a continuing beauty focus on brows which has been reflected on Pinterest this year. Pins relating to microblading, a less permanent, less painful form of eyebrow tattooing, rose by 255 per cent in 2016.

Jojoba oil: This breakout beauty solution with super hydrating properties gained popularity from early last year and interest has risen by 30 per cent on the social media platform.

Cut-crease eye makeup: This popular Instagram look will inspire consumers to take a DIY approach to this precise eyeshadow trend. Up 138 per cent last year.

Charcoal masks: Up a big 333 per cent, the charcoal mask is another suggested avenue of growth as the Instagramability of face masks continues to inspire consumers.

Chrome nails: The chrome nail trend exploded on social media in 2016 and engagement is up a massive 570 per cent. According to Pinterest, searches and pins have increased by 50 per cent every month since the summer.

Lip and cheek stain: There's already a buzz about two-in-one beauty products and Pinterest users have confirmed their popularity. Lip and cheek stain pins were up 33 per cent last year.

Head scarfs: Despite so much interest in hair care and styling, Pinterest users are obviously keen to find solutions for those bad hair days as well. Head scarf engagement was up 25 per cent.
