bdBLOG: The mane event

I always get massive hair envy. And it’s not just when watching Gossip Girl or reading articles about Victoria’s Secret models. Girls walking down the street with the perfect messy bun, my editor flicking her outrageously full and healthy mane, my boss rocking out the pixie look – my green eyes are constantly flashing.

There’s nothing like a fresh blow-dry or my hair deciding to do the right thing to put me in a good mood (and don’t even get me started on the buzzing feeling from getting my roots dyed). But on all the other days, it’s definitely a case of it’s greener on the other side.”

Curly-haired curls want straight hair, straight-haired curls want curly hair. Blondes want to try being brunette, while redheads can’t understand why everyone is suddenly dying their hair crimson.

When it comes to being happy with what we’ve been given, it seems the figures are very low for what’s on top. A recent survey of 1000 women in the US by Dove called Make Friends with Your Hair found only 7 per cent of respondents love their locks. These numbers are a bit sad when I think of all the fabulous hair that’s out there.

The survey also found hair care is a higher priority in a woman’s morning routine than eating breakfast (45 per cent as opposed to 41 per cent), applying make-up (39 per cent) and extra sleep (35 per cent). So at least we haven’t given up completely and stopped putting in the effort!

Another interesting statistic coming out of the study was that 58 per cent of women use three or more hair products on an average day to manage/tame their unpredictable hair. This is definitely true with me – I use shampoo, conditioner, treatment, hair heat protection, blow dryer, straightener and smoothing cream. Seven products a day!

While I never let a bad hair day stand in the way of a good time – the same can’t be said for some of the respondents, with 20 per cent admitting they have passed on a social event as a result of unpredictable hair.

Do you love your hair? Has a bad hair day ever stopped you from doing what you wanted?
