Social reach shapes Revlon's new ambassador

These days we're seeing beauty brands paying just as much attention to a celebrity's social media reach as their star potential, with Revlon's latest signing a reflection of this. With 13.9 million followers to her name, Ciara is one influential woman, a factor that hasn't gone unnoticed by Revlon – who has just tapped the singer as its new brand ambassador.

On the appointment, Revlon chief marketing officer Benjamin Karsch says the brand likes to “use both social influencers as well as broad brand ambassadors, but Ciara is someone who is really both. By partnering with a celebrity like Ciara, who has such tremendous reach and visibility, we gain access to her fan base and specifically with Ciara on Instagram alone, she’s got more than 13 million followers.

“Ciara is a great example of an empowered woman who chooses what she wants and goes after it. Ciara represents the confident woman who knows the importance of loving herself first in order to actively seek and choose the love that she knows she deserves.”

For Ciara, it was like the partnership with Revlon was always meant to be – having been originally named after the brand’s Ciara fragrance that debuted in 1973. “My mom had been trying to figure out my name for a long time before I was born… It was two names – it was Bianca or something else – nothing had anything to do with Ciara," reveals the star.

"Then my dad bought her the fragrance – the Ciara fragrance by Revlon – from the commissary at the military base. They were in Texas, he bought her the fragrance and not only did he love this fragrance but the name also really resonated with her and she ditched all the other names and Ciara became my name.

“I think my mom was putting it into the universe: ‘Your name will be Ciara and one day you will have a Revlon campaign.’”
