From the 4th to the 5th of June, the Naturally Good Expo descended on Sydney’s ICC Exhibition Centre to show off all of the upcoming new, and innovative trends in the category.
Here, BD rounds up some key trends in natural beauty that you should be watching out for following this year’s trade show.
Expansion of traditional Chinese Medicine
Chinese Medicine is quickly heading into the beauty mainstream thanks to the increasing normalcy of natural beauty and ingredients. Key ingredients to look out for are white flower, ginseng, mushroom, goji and liquorice root.
Expansion of mineral-based skincare
We’ve already seen a major growth in clay or charcoal-based products, and this is only going to continue to grow. Other minerals to watch for are epsom salts, magnesium, melatonin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane).
Emergence of coconut oil-based oral care
The hottest trend in oral care at the moment is oil pulling. What is it? An ayurvedic oral hygiene method whereby coconut oil is swished around in the mouth for an extended time period in order to clear debris and extract toxins from the soft tissue and gums. Expect to see it in everything from toothpaste to teeth whitening.
Emergence of EWG verified certification
EWG stands for the Environmental Working Group - a non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. The EWG has developed a verification method called ‘Skin Deep’ that helps determine the potential health concerns associated with topical products.
Bitters will be in everything
Bitters are the new superfoods, with the likes of dandelion, tumeric, saffron, coffee and sesame penned to be the next big thing. What do they do? These ingredients stimulate appetite and give digestive support, boost your metabolism, enhance immune function, fight free radicals, and aid in blood sugar regulation.
There’s some new health foods to watch out for
We’ve seen kale pop up in everything for the past few years, but it’s time to put away the green stuff and pick up some cauliflower instead. Cauliflower has a multitude of benefits that are just coming to light, as they contain a newly discovered sulfur compound that has been shown to kill cancer stem cells. One serving of cauliflower also contains 77 per cent of the recommended daily value of vitamin C, and is a good source of protein and fiber.
Getting your collagen from the inside-out
We all know the importance of anti-ageing products and using ingredients like retin-As for collagen production, but now there’s a new way of boosting collagen. Some foods when consumed can assist in helping your skin health, and one such way is by drinking bone broth. Bone broth is rich in minerals that support the immune system and contain compounds like collagen, glutamine, glycine and proline. Also keep an eye out for supplements and snacks that contain collagen, as they’re guaranteed to be everywhere.
