The women pushing for diversity at David Jones

While models are traditionally pictured as lithe and lean, Jesinta Franklin and Pip Edwards are pushing to change this ideal.

Both women, alongside JONES Magazine fashion director Thelma McQuillan, demanded that when casting models for the upcoming David Jones summer showcase, they be healthy and fit.

The brief that was sent to agencies prior to the casting process was for models who “lunge and laugh”.

Speaking on their decision to actively seek out healthy, #fitspo-type models, Franklin – a David Jones ambassador – said: "I am not a typical size six, heroin chic model, I never have been, so that fact I'm now getting to walk in these shows is a reflection that the industry is starting to embrace a diverse range of body sizes.”

Edwards – founder of athletic label P.E. Nation – echoed Franklin’s sentiments, expressing her delight at the calibre of models that auditioned for a spot in the showcase: "There was a lot of diversity, which I love. Short girls who had real muscle and taller girls with some serious definition.”
