The world’s current top beauty trends

One of the biggest ways to find out what’s popular in the beauty world is to look up what’s trending on social media; and while this can mean searching for heavily-populated hashtags on Instagram, Pinterest has just revealed the top beauty trends around the world based on what its users are pinning*. 

Broken down into hair, makeup and nails, read on to find out what’s hot where. 

Makeup

  • Japan: Japanese women are turning to orange blush instead of pink (+250 per cent).
  • Brazil: Wine-colored lipstick (+93 per cent).
  • France: Artistic makeup – whether it be a crazy shadow or an alternative liner – is up 88 per cent in France.
  • Argentina: Argentinians are adding a bit of extra sparkle with glitter makeup (+77 per cent).
  • Spain: Russian volume eyelash extensions are picking up across the world, but in Spain, the trend is really taking off (+700 per cent). 
  • South Africa: Classic, sexy, cat-eye makeup is up 131 per cent in South Africa. 

Hair

  • US: In the US, braids are one of the most coveted hairstyles (+445 per cent).  
  • Germany: Keep it short and chic with pixie cuts (+266 per cent).
  • France: The french are loving buns. Searches for messy buns are up 137 per cent, and braided buns 272 per cent 
  • UK: French ladies aren’t the only ones giving buns a try. In the UK, it’s all about side buns (+164 per cent).
  • Argentina: Frame your face with flequillo abierto—or open bangs (+150 per cent).
  • Brazil: In Brazil, more and more Pinners are looking for ways to style box braids (+97 per cent).
  • Spain: The Spanish are loving a luxurious yet relaxed hairstyle called “ondas al agua”, or waves on the water (+133 per cent).
  • South Africa: Twisted braids are up 70 per cent.

Nails

  • US: You might know of ombre hair, but have you heard of ombre nails? (+88 per cent).
  • Germany and France: Pinners are loving “baby boomer nails” – nails with an ombre style fade into a French tip (up 172 per cent in Germany and 100 per cent in France). 
  • UK: The bold yet classic red nails are up 90 per cent.
  • Argentina: Sculpted nails (a ball of product that is molded or “sculpted” to the desired nail shape) is up 74 per cent.
  • Brazil: The Brazilians are feeling DIY as handmade nail stickers are trending (+30 per cent).
  • Australia: Searches for marble nails have increased by 31 per cent.
  • Japan: In Japan, it’s all about keeping things subtle. Searches for nuance nails have increased by 55 per cent.
  • Spain: In Spain, people are mixing things up by painting each nail with a different colour (+239 per cent).
  • South Africa: Glitter nails are up 102 per cent.
