According to an article by Refinery29, California has just passed a bill that will majorly reduce animal suffering.
The passing of the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, SB 1249 was approved by the State Assembly in a unanimous vote on Tuesday. This means it will be illegal for manufacturers to knowingly sell cosmetic or hygiene products that have been tested on animals within state limits.
The bill is a result of California Senator, Cathleen Galgiani’s efforts, and the state is the first in the U.S to completely ban products tested on animals.
"I'm proud of California lawmakers for moving science, industry, and ethics forward today," Senator Galgiani said in a statement. "Cruelty-free cosmetics are good for business, safe for humans and don't harm animals."
SB 1249 principal co-author and Assembly member, Ash Kalra also added: “This compromise reflects how business interests and consumer protection can go hand in hand, and I commend animal rights activists and the cosmetic industry alike, as we move forward on this important legislation to protect animals and adopt cruelty-free cosmetics.”
The law will come into effect on January 1 2020, giving companies plenty of time to clear out inventory and invest in new cruelty-free products.
