It has been revealed that International Women’s Day was 2018’s most-talked-about moment on Facebook.
According to a blog post by research manager, Sheida Neman, this is because the conversation was “about more than the day itself,” it was generated by both genders, and it included a “wide range of topics, issues and causes related to women.”
The “March for Our Lives” movement in February, which occurred after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, also drove conversation and action around the world. More than one million people showed interest in attending a Facebook event for the movement, and over $2.5 million was raised through the social media’s fundraiser.
The top moments in 2018 for conversation regarding voting and changes in local government were October’s presidential election in Brazil and November’s midterm elections in the U.S.
In the world of sports, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia produced 2.3 billion posts, comments, reactions and shares from over 383 million soccer fans. Super Bowl LII saw more than 62 million people discussing the game and the halftime performance by Justin Timberlake in honour of the late singer, Prince.
The royals also heated up the social media feed, with 42 million people posting about the Royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19.
Many posts were shared mourning those who were lost in 2018, including Avicii, Aretha Franklin, Dolores O’Riordan, Anthony Bourdain, Burt Reynolds, Stephen Hawking and Nelson Mandela – who alone generated millions of tributes on his would-be 100th birthday on July 17.
Facebook also announced that starting today, users may start seeing personalised “Year in Review” videos in their news feeds, featuring their special moments from 2018.
