The latest hair style trends and how to get them

While many of us slowly but steadily emerge from lockdown and rush right back to our beloved stylists for touch-ups and complete makeovers, new hair style trends are out in full force.

“An external change can be a simple and easy way to signify a transition that is internally more complex and harder to articulate otherwise,” therapist Nikki Nachum, told Allure. “A new hair cut becomes almost like an announcement to both yourself and the outer world that something is changing in your life.”

And while many styles from last year have spilled over due to COVID-19 standstills, some of the below cuts are what clients are requesting most from their hair dressers. To learn more and to get the look, make sure to click on the below product names.

A major trend sweeping the world right now is the curly shag. According to Julien Farel, creative director and owner of the Julien Farel Restore Salon and Spa at New York City's Regency Hotel, the shag cut is a fun way to experiment with different lengths and fringes.

And with more women embracing their curls and coils after lockdown, this trend definitely won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

Face-framing layers

Aptly named the ‘modern Rachel,’ face-framing layers are a great and simple way to try something new without majorly changing your hair’s length, according to leading hair stylist, Ritsuko Hotaka.

With many people growing their hair longer in lockdown, face-framing layers are also the ideal way to add shape to the new growth. Particularly great for thick hair, this style also delivers movement and eliminates face bulkiness.

Heatless texture

Hair stylist, Justine Marjan, told Allure that clients are embracing their natural texture much more in 2021.

"As more and more people are working from home and social distancing, many are taking this time to focus on self-care and lay off heat-styling while salon visits are stretched," she said.

The perfect way to achieve an effortless, natural look full of texture, she explained, is to let your hair air-dry 90% of the way – then spritz in some texturising spray and throw it up into a messy bun for a while. When released, you will have naturally messy waves, with no curling iron needed.

Mullets for men

No matter what you may think of this iconic (previously dated) ‘80s hair style, the mullet is now well and truly back in action and has been gaining momentium since 2020.

In fact, football players, musicians and fashion tastemakers have all embraced the short at the front, long at the back look for its seemingly eye-catching shape and laid back vibe. According to experts, it’s also surprisingly flattering for a wide range of face shapes.
