Kerry Parnell farewells The Telegraph

Kerry Parnell has had one of those careers many in the media would only dream of having – securing some of the publishing industry’s most lust-worthy of jobs. Now, The Telegraph’s head of lifestyle has announced she’s not only leaving the publication, but leaving Australia and a full-time media career.

Finishing up on September 23, Parnell will be joining the freelance world – writing for both the Australian and UK markets. To find out more about this move and her career, BD tracks Parnell down for a quick five-minute chat.

Can you tell me a bit about your career history?
I've been working in women's magazines and newspapers in the UK and Australia for 25 years – most recently as head of lifestyle at The Telegraph, but previous roles have included launch editor of the postponed Australian Glamour, executive editor of Australian marie claire, acting editor of Red in the UK, deputy editor of UK Glamour, editor of The Sunday People magazine, and editor of teenage titles Bliss in the UK and Girlfriend in Australia.

What was behind your decision to move back to the UK?
I've moved back and forth between Australia and the UK several times. This time we made the decision to take our children to be close to family and start a new chapter as a freelancer.

Are you sad to be leaving The Telegraph
I'm extremely sad to be leaving The Telegraph – it was a very hard decision to go. I oversaw some great brands in the Daily and Sunday Telegraph and worked with a fabulous team. But I hope to stay in touch.

What are your next career plans?
I am starting my own freelance business, looking to work with Australian and British brands and titles. I'd like to mix journalism for newspapers and magazines with commercial work.

Will you be continuing to work for Australian media and brands?
Yes, I have a unique insight into both markets and with many UK brands expanding into the Australian market, I hope to be of help.

Where do you expect your career to be in five years' time?
I'd like to have built up my business – and written a bestseller of course!
