Jaclyn Hill’s lessons on YouTube

Jaclyn Hill is no stranger to success in the beauty vlogging world, with 3,228,962 subscribers to her tutorial channel. She has cemented her place as a leading beauty influencer with a continuing collaboration with Becca and a forthcoming make-up line of her own. Recently she spoke to WWD about her thoughts on what it takes to cut it in the YouTube world:

Learn from your mistakes
“My first tutorial was January 12, 2012. I was just like, ‘Today, we’re going to be talking about the difference between bronzing and contouring.’ I was so robotic. I actually deleted that video – my second video is the one I kept up, and I refer to that one as my first. That was my Kim Kardashian make-up tutorial. Most of the video I’m just holding my lamp as my light towards me as I’m doing my make-up. It’s so bad.”

Embrace every opportunity
“[When it comes to whether the social media community will be here forever], I’m terrified. I’m like, ‘This is my moment, I’m having my moment, and a year from now no one’s going to know my name.’ At the end of the day, there’s always something new, there’s always something fresh, there’s the new generation and the up-and-comers, so who knows. That’s why it’s so important to know what it is that you want out of life, know what it is that you want out of YouTube and go for it. Waste no time.”

Have an end goal
“Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics is a thing, and it’s been a thing for three years. It’s just me and my mom. We have no investors, we have no one controlling, we have no one telling us what to do, so that’s why it’s taken three years. I’m hoping that is going to be my end destination. We’re hoping for an April launch. We are starting off with lipsticks. The best lipsticks you’ve used in your entire life.”
