Instagram Stories has only just landed, but the addition to the popular social media app is already looking to the future. Specifically, Instagram will be incorporating its traditional feed algorithm technique that suggests accounts to users into Instagram Stories.
A tab of Stories suggestions will sit atop the Explore tab, tailoring recommendations based on who you follow and what topics you prefer. Instagram believes the feature will be popular - with its current Instagram account suggestions region already popular. The company says 100 million people visit it everyday, which is one third of the app’s daily actives.
Director of product management Blake Barnes explains to TechCrunch of the Explore feature: “Some seek it out as the primary way they use Instagram…some people view it as a dessert.” Barnes also comments that the Stories addition has proved popular. “We’re really excited to see how quickly they’ve caught on, whether with everyday users or celebrities and brands. Stories removed the fear of over-posting or worrying about likes and comments. It has the early signs of being a product people love.”
TechCrunch also comment that the latest expansion of the algorithm approach also reveals Instagram’s continued interest in following Facebook’s lead to rely on artificial intelligence for curation rather than humans.
