World’s first colour-changing hair dye debuts

While it may have once been deemed impossible, a hair dye that changes colour according to the world around you has just been developed and debuted at London Fashion Week in collaboration with Storm Models.

Lauren Bowker, founder and scientist behind reactive fashion label The Unseen, premiered the unbelievable product - dubbed ‘FIRE’ - during LFW.

The Unseen’s patented colour-change technology has been augmented into a specially formulated hair dye, which is designed to be responsive to temperature fluctuations.

The dye stems from the process of thermoregulation in human skin and the chemical reactions that occur in response to certain stimuli. In this case, the carbon-based molecules in the dye will undergo a reversible reaction when the temperature drops or rises.

Available in multiple colour ranges from fiery red to soft pastels, Bowker is insistent that the dye’s toxicity has been fully evaluated, stating that “because of how we’ve formulated the dye, we’re confident there will be no damage to the scalp, and no significant effect on the hair fibres themselves. No more than typical semi-permanent dyes, that is.”

Unfortunately, the hair dye won’t be made available to the public before the chemical formula has undergone a complete toxicology screening; however, testing has already begun.

It is no wonder that Bowker has been dubbed ‘The Alchemist’ in fashion circles, as FIRE is the successor of previous chemical/fashion projects such as a jacket that changes colour in response to pollution levels, and a Swarovski crystal headpiece that transforms colour according to brain activity.
