Despite the annual launch of new (and often complicated and expensive) exercise fads, the top trend for fitness in 2015 is all about going back to basics to get people in shape. And the best bit? It can be done at home for free - with no equipment.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine’s 2015 ACSM Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends, bodyweight training will be the most favoured form of fitness this year.
While the list included popular trends from previous years such as yoga, high-intensity interval training and boot camp, noticeable absences were CrossFit, Pilates, indoor cycling, stability ball, balance training, and Zumba®.
When explaining the popularity of functional fitness, bodyweight and mobility-based training to Sydney Morning Herald, Bottoms Up! Fitness founder Libby Babet said: "There is a definite move towards this type of programming because people are realising it's the most effective style of training for a majority of people, is cheap and versatile, as well as being a lot safer, with more longevity than a lot of the fads.”
