Introducing beautyheaven’s new content producer

Following the departure of Olivia Mackinnon last week, beautyheaven is pleased to welcome new content producer Astrid Taemets. With experience across both magazines and digital having worked at Harper’s BAZAAR, PRIMPED and The Knot, Taemets is a great new addition to the editorial team.

BD sits down with Taemets to find out everything you need to know about beautyheaven’s latest recruit...

How did you get your start in media?
I got my first taste of the media world when I was about 15 years old. I lived in Brisbane and desperately wanted to work in magazines, so when I was offered an internship with ACP Magazines (now Bauer Media Group) over the Christmas holidays, I begged my parents to let me go. I was instantly hooked.

In my final year of Journalism, Media & Communication at QUT in Brisbane, I decided I wanted a job at ACP and nothing was going to stop me. I spent the last semester of that year flying back and forth throughout the weeks to intern, and boy did it pay off!

Where did your career progress from there?
Once I graduated, I got a job working as a production controller for a number of ACP titles (thirteen to be exact) and, after a year, was offered a position as production editor at Harper’s BAZAAR

Harper’s offered me more than I could have ever imagined. I really have to thank Kellie Hush, Eugenie Kelly and Huw Reynolds for putting their faith in me, and taking on such a young, wide-eyed girl with very little publishing experience. On top of working as production editor, I occasionally contributed to harpersbazaar.com.au, and it just opened my mind to the possibilities of digital.

From there, I worked with PRIMPED and The Knot as the content producer where I learnt how to incorporate my knowledge of print to the world of digital under Juliette Winter. Juliette mentored me with such incredible patience and kindness - I will be forever indebted to her.

What attracted you to the position at beautyheaven?
beautyheaven has long been on my radar, and when I saw there was a content producer position available, I jumped at the chance to apply. In fact, it was Juliette who made me aware of the role, and I’m so unbelievably happy she did. bh is such a wonderful company – they work hard but have lots of fun. I’ve never met a team so close and genuinely passionate about what they do. It’s incredibly inspiring to be a part of.

Have you always been interested in the beauty media world?
I’ve had a love affair with beauty since I was just a wee teen discovering bronzer for the first time. Regrettably, I wore far too much in those early days, but as I grew up a little and got a job within the fashion and beauty realm of Harper’s and then PRIMPED, I realised that working in beauty is exactly where I am supposed to be. I think it’s every girl’s dream to work in the beauty media world, I’m just one of the lucky few who actually gets to do it.

What will your role involve?
I will be primarily looking after the hair and perfume silos of beautyheaven, writing content on the latest and greatest new hair ‘do’s and how to’s, my top summer fragrances and plenty more. I look forward to meeting the faces of the industry and expanding my knowledge to bring beautyheaven readers a whole heap of beauty!
