Luxury fashion powerhouse Givenchy has unveiled Julia Roberts as the makeup-free face of its AW15 campaign. Creative director Riccardo Tisci bucked the current celebrity brand partnership trend, choosing Roberts as the face of the Givenchy Autumn/Winter campaign because of her icon status, not her social media following.
“I liked that she is one of the biggest stars in the world but you don’t see her in fashion imagery," Tisci told The Guardian UK. "But still, she's one of the most well-known people in the world. Today, celebrity has become so much [about] how many followers you have, how big you are on Facebook.”
Tisci added: “For me, she represents a pure talent and a pure beauty. So many celebrities are celebrities today not because of their talent. That's fine, it's the moment today. But she's an iconic actress."
In the campaign imagery, Roberts is barefaced and staring straight into the camera.
"The campaign is quite strong because people want to see Julia in the way she is on screen, but in real life she's much more tomboyish, no makeup," revealed Tisci. "This is everyday Julia, not what you see on the red carpet or in the movies. This was an iconic moment because she is an icon."
