Steph Adams is a veteran of the magazine world, with a varied career that has taken her from Perth to London, working at Elle UK, Harper’s BAZAAR (both UK and Aus) and NET-A-PORTER. Now home from a stint overseas, she shows no sign of slowing down, having built a successful fashion and lifestyle blog and collaborating on major events and with companies Down Under.
BD sat down with the blogger to discuss her latest movements and her thoughts on the differing mediascapes between Australia and the UK.
You’ve had a varied and interesting career! Can you talk us through it?
I grew up in Perth and I was modelling with VIVIEN'S while studying for my Bachelor of Arts in Design. A photographer then brought me to Sydney for work and I just fell in love with the city. I moved here, then started working at Vogue as a graphic designer. After that, I worked at marie claire in the promotions department as an Art Director, and everything went from there. I freelanced for Harper’s BAZAAR, Belle, Grazia and InStyle before I moved to London to work for British Vogue, marie claire UK, ELLE UK, Conde Nast Traveler and NET-A-PORTER.
How long have you been back in Australia?
I moved home three years ago.
What made you decide to move?
It was a lifestyle decision. We are so blessed with such a beautiful city and beach lifestyle, and I wanted to be close to my family.
What are the differences between working in Australia and the UK?
It’s very exciting working overseas because you are in the heart of the melting pot, but Australia has a lot to offer, and a lot of talent.
Can you tell me about the work you've been doing since returning home?
I have been collaborating with brands as an influencer as well as working for brands and providing creative direction for campaigns and photoshoots, whether it be in-studio or out on location.
You were a NSW Fashion Ambassador at MBFW in 2014. How did this come about?
I was approached by the NSW Tourism Industry to come on board as an Ambassador. I was very honoured to be a part of that.
What has been your career highlight?
Working with NET-A-PORTER as art editor and freelancing as an art director for British Vogue were definitely ‘pinch me now’ moments.
What can we expect from you and the Steph Adams blog in the coming months?
More interviews, beauty and fashion collaborations and a lot more travel. I’m off to Fiji next week and then L.A in early January next year.
