Luxury brands working on sustainable fragrances

As sustainable beauty grows increasingly popular with consumers, luxury brands are now looking towards utilising eco-friendly ingredients in fragrance.

Chopard is one of the first luxury house to take steps towards sustainable fragrances; announcing earlier this week that it will launch a series of unisex perfumes made from sustainable ingredients. In past years the likes of Comme des Garçons have also launched sustainable fragrances

The move is big for the high-end industry as while many smaller perfume brands have long preached their usage of natural ingredients and recycled packages, major fashion and beauty brands are yet to follow suit.

Phlur CEO and founder Eric Korman puts the lack of natural fragrances down to the shortfall of protocols surrounding development; and the Food and Drug Administration’s non-requirement for ingredient transparency.

There are pros and cons to both natural and synthetic fragrance, with one side arguing that synthetic fragrances are made in a lab so that you can be wary of skin allergies; however, it’s looking like major brands (i.e. Goop) are setting a precedent for their peers to follow for natural fragrance.

Chopard's fragrance will be available worldwide from June.
