It’s a tumultuous year for media with plenty of layoffs abounding in publications near and far. American beauty title Allure is the latest glossy to brace staff for potential layoffs, expanding on job cuts which began last month.
WWD has reported that the majority of Allure’s 15 contributing editors have been told their contracts will not be renewed. Instead, a handful were offered the opportunity to freelance.
WWD commented: “While the changes not only fit in with Condé Nast’s aggressive cost-cutting program, they also could signal similar shifts at sibling magazines with contributor-heavy mastheads, an insider suggested.”
It’s believed that the staff shifts are a growing desire for Condé Nast to integrate digitally-savvy editors into the company. This is particularly true of Allure, which on November 11 saw founding editor-in-chief Linda Wells replaced by Nylon’s Michelle Lee.
